The Soup Spoon (Bugis Branch)

Of course, this was not the first time I patronized "The Soup Spoon". However, I thought I should mention it here in my blog since I have always loved their soup. Yesterday, after attending a briefing at Buona Vista, I took the train down to Bugis. Looking for somewhere quiet, I decided to settle down at "The Soup Spoon". I ordered my favourite Boston Clam Chowder soup. It always never fail to disappoint me with its chunky clams or shall I call them chewy clams? Simply love the chewiness of the clams, almost every scoop I can find them. The soup is thick with chunky pieces of potatos.

I ordered the set meal. Topped up another $3.70 for a sandwhich and a glass of lemon tea. I decided to try the roasted beef wasabi sandwich.

The sandwich itself was ok. But the salad was yucky... I only took one bite of the salad.

Nomin Steamboat

Today is a rainy day. After half-day of work, my husband brought me to this restaurant for lunch. We ordered the seafood steamboat. Other than the normal seafood - Crabs, Prawns, Fish, Squids, Scallops, I am surprised to find frog legs here too!! I love the scallops and the crabs, very fresh and sweet. The soup, from what I gathered from the menu, contains different types of Chinese wines, Martell and some herbs. The soup base was really thick and also very sweet to taste. Another special point worth mentioning is that they use claypot for the steamboat, different from the normal metal ones that we often see.

The seafood steamboat cost $32 and if you want to add another plate of seafood, got to add another $20. Both of us were very very full after we finished up all the food. Thus, if you are not a very big eater, there is no need for you to order other side dishes if there are only 2 person having the steamboat. My husband told me that the previous time when he came with his friend who recommended him to this place, apart from the steamboat, they ordered another 3 side dishes!! Of course, they couldn't finish up the food. What a waste :(

Frog Porridge

Other than Geylang Lorong 9, another place to go for frog porridge is Tampines Blk 802 food court. We ordered the frogs cooked in Kung Bao sauce. Very spicy but shiok! This cost $16 (with 2 frogs) and and additional $3 for the porridge. Mix the sauce well into your bowl of plain porridge. If you cannot take spicy stuff, you can also order the one cooked with ginger and spring onion.

I remembered there was a time when I went JB Taman Tebrau for a meal. By chance, I actually saw the hawker chopping a live frog into 2!! I was startled because everything was so fast for me to react. Do you dare to take frog meat?

Geylang Lorong 9 Beef Hor Fun

This plate of beef hor fun serves 2. You can see that the portion of sliced beef is almost equal to the portion of hor fun. Also, not much green to mention. maybe just 1 or 2 pieces of vege :( The beef slices are very tender and I like the Dou(4) Ban(3) sauce (Black Bean Paste Sauce).

Outram Park Ya Hua Bak Kut Teh

This is our favourite Bak Kut Teh place so far. The other "side dishes" that we like to order everytime we visit the place are the You Tiao (to dip into the soup) and also, the intestines. I love the clear, peppery soup. Their service is also good. They will refill your bowl of soup very frequently. I also prefer the fatter meat as compared to the lean meat :)

I had made reservation for 2 at Ritz Carlton Greenhouse to celebrate Francis' Birthday. Both of us love seafood. So the above are the reasons why we were here... the lobsters, the crabs and the oysters!!

Fish Mart Sakuraya

If you want to order sashimi here, first you can do your marketing at the "Fish Mart". Choose whatever fish/ seafood (nicely sealed, with clearly labelled price tag) you want from the chilled case and pass them to the chef and he will slice the fish and serve to you what you had ordered in a nice presented plate of sashimi. The sashimi here are very fresh. We ordered our favourite selections - salmon and swordfish. Besides the sashimi, we ordered tempura, potato salad, seafood miso soup, agadashi tofu, shishamo. Total cost around $50 for two.

By the way, we also saw Adrian Pang and Wang Xiang Pin at the restaurant. Many turned their attention to them and for a while, our order was delayed.. but not really an issue lah. The meal was overall quite satisfying. There is another branch at Parkway Parade too, maybe next time can go there and try.

The kitchen is those open-concept type and the dining place, is a bit small which is just beside the kitchen area. After you meal, you may want to shop at their mini-mart which sell a wide varieties of Jap tibits.

Don - The Personal Pie Club @ Suntec [Closed]

Update:  Don - The Personal Pie Club at Suntec was closed.

Main Branch:
20 Cross Street, #01-34/35/36, China Square Central, Singapore 048422 - along China Street
Other than pies, they specialize in crab beehoon too!

1 May 2008 (Labour Day)

After watching movie "Iron Man" at EW Suntec, Francis and I decided to settle somewhere in Suntec for dinner. We walked around the Fountain of Wealth but couldn't decide which restaurants we should go to. Since we were not too hungry, I suggested going to the 1st level (where you can find donut factory, ShiLin Mee sua) to snack around.
We chanced upon "Don", saw some articles with its good reviews and even recommendation from "Makansutra" at their entrance so we decided to give it a try.

We were welcomed by the very friendly staffs and she said their black pepper chicken pies were very good, got big chunks of chicken. I ordered the shephard pie ($5.30) and Francis ordered the black pepper chicken pie. Actually the filling for both pies are the same, the only difference is that mine doesn't have the fluffy crust (Whoo... simply loved it, see photo) and is replaced by potato crust. The fillings of the pie is very generous - Big chunks of chicken, mushrooms, mixed vegetables, peppercorn and hard-boiled egg. I felt that Francis' pie tasted much better than my shephard pie although I am a very "potato person" :P I simply loved the strong peppery taste of the chicken.Their pies were all freshly baked from the oven.

While we were dining in, a couple walked in and wanted to order a big pie. The staff explained to them very politely and nicely that they had to wait for 1 hour for them to bake a new pie as they had sold out all the baked pies. The couple gladly agreed to wait.Franics loved the pie and he bought a big pie (around $18) to take away, for our family to try. Before we left Suntec, I didn't forget to buy half a dozen of donuts from Donut Factory for supper cos I am those type of person who will always go hungry at night easily :P

Tao's Restaurant @ Paradize Centre

Husband and I went Tao's Restaurant for 7-course set dinner. The whole restuarant was packed, unlike the Hey Hey Hotpot restaurant (opened by TCS actor Cao Guo Hui) next door which was pathetically deserted. Although both of us didn't really take a proper lunch, we were so full and bloated when we finished our dinner at Tao's. Actually, for me, before the main course arrived, I was already full! No joke! So what came before the main course?

We had our own mushroom and cheese gratin which goes well with their lightly toasted breadstick as a starter. For salad, we ordered Farm Boy Splendor (From the name you wouldn't know what it is.. It is basically sliced chicken with lettuce, topped with some sour-plum sauce) and the other one I ordered is the fruit salad. Next, we had wild mushrooms.. one of my favourite dishes, not too sure whether hubby can cook this for me next time? :P Then came the soup, husband had cream of mushroom which was very thick and creamy and I had the shark-fin melon soup. Cannot find shark-fin in the soup... only melon that looked like shark-fin :P They served sorbet in a shot-glass, very refreshing. However, husband and I were both full before the main course started. He had the pork ribs and I had baked fish with cheese. We had a few bites and we stopped to "rest"... Keke.. Seeing that our food was untouched for quite a while, the manager came to us and asked us whether there was anything wrong with the food. He even said he could help us to heat up our food if we required.

Service was excellent here! This was my second time to Tao's restaurant. The first time I came was together with my friends a couple of years ago. Their service was as good as before.. very personalized and their staffs and managers will walk around and chat with you, very very friendly.

Finally, after the main course, we had the dessert - Creme Brulee and also, their fruit+flower tea.
Cost of the set dinner: $28.90 per person which I think is really value for $$.
Service: I would give them 10/10.
